In these gatherings participants recall the Prophet's birth, his life story (sirah) and his great character are extolled, as Allah said in the Holy Qur'an, "we sent you not but as a Mercy to all the worlds." (Quran - 21:107).

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was a Prophet of love and compassion - a mercy for the whole of mankind.

The birthday of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is celebrated on the 12 th day of Rabi-al-Awwal (third mongh of Muslim Calendar) ( this year 9 March ). on this day Muslims send their blessings to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) with recitation of praises and blessings. Muslim organizations arrange for lectures in mosques during the month of Rabi-al-Awal in order to remember the life history of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and his good deeds. The birthday of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is known as Mawlid, Milad, Milad an-Nabi, Mevlid Serif, Mawlid ar-Rasul, Yawm an-Nabi or Milad-un-Nabi.

As mentioned in Hadith: The Ethiopians danced in front of the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace); dancing and saying [in their language], Muhammad is a righteous servant. The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, What are they saying? And they said, Muhammad is a righteous servant (Musnad al-Imam Ahmad. 6 vols. Cairo 1313/1895. Reprint. Beirut: Dar Sadir, n.d., 3.152). All the narrators are those of Bukhari except Hammad ibn Salama, who is one of the narrators of Muslim.
