  • New HIV vaccine to be trialed in South Africa

A vaccine against HIV will be trialed in South Africa later this year after it met the criteria needed to prove it could help fight the epidemic in Africa.

2.1 million infections were reported in the continent in 2015, two thirds of which occurred in sub-Saharan Africa. A small trial, known as HVTN100, initially took place in South Africa in 2015 to test the safety and strength of immunity the vaccine could provide, ahead of any large-scale testing in affected populations.

  • IMF Chief Christine Lagarde Must Stand Trial over Controversial Deal

France’s top court has ruled that International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde must stand trial in France over a 2008 arbitration ruling that handed 400 million euros to a politically-connected business magnate. Lagarde, who was French finance minister at the time of the deal in favor of tycoon Bernard Tapie, is accused of negligence in the case. She has denied wrongdoing.

A special court ruled in December that Lagarde should stand trial, but she appealed. France’s Court of Cassation on Friday rejected the appeal. Lagarde’s lawyers did not immediately respond to the decision. Lagarde, who was in China on Friday at a Group of 20 summit, has said she had acted “in the best interest of the French state and in full compliance with the law.”

The flights represent a major step forward for "Project Solaris," a partnership between biochemists Sunchem SA, fuel specialists SkyNRG, SAA, and Boeing, which launched in 2014 with the aim of delivering "local, sustainable jet fuel production" at large scale.
"This is very significant as it proves we can use this biofuel," says Ian Cruickshank, SAA Group Environmental Affairs Specialist. "It shows the industry is really changing. Four or five years ago biofuel was seen as futuristic, and today it's here." Read more »
