  • Ethiopia’s Henok Mehari working with Cynthia Morgan at Coke Studio

Nine years after he last toured Kenya, Ethiopian singer and producer Henok Mehari is back in Nairobi to take part in the continental TV show Coke Studio Africa, where he will collaborate with Nigeria’s Cynthia Morgan on a unique fusion of Ethiopian and Nigerian music.

Music In Africa spoke to Henok recently to find out more about his work.

“It feels great to be back in Nairobi!" he said. "My participation at Coke Studio Africa is really timely. After the release of my album 790, I have been encouraging my band the Mehari Brothers that we need to forge newer working relations with other artists outside Ethiopia. Coke Studio Africa is thus a timely opportunity to explore and find out what other artists are doing and how we can work together.”

While in Kenya, Henok will collaborate with Nigerian singer Cynthia Morgan, whose music is a fusion of pop, hip-hop and dancehall. She shot into limelight following the release of two hit singles, ‘Don't Break My Heart’ and ‘Lead Me On’, which received massive airplay and positive reviews.

  • Brazil Arrested 10 ISIS Backers in Olympics Anti-Terror Swoop

Ten Brazilians who pledged allegiance to the Islamic State militant group were arrested Thursday, authorities announced, describing them as "amateurs" who discussed on social media the possibility of staging attacks during next month's Olympics.

Justice Minister Alexandre de Moraes said in the capital, Brasilia, that the 10 were being held on two terrorism-related charges and that two more people were being sought. Authorities said any attack plan would have had little chance of coming to fruition, citing the group's lack of resources and skills. But officials and security experts argued that police were justified in being aggressive in light of "lone wolf" attacks staged in the U.S. and Europe by men with little or no training.

  • New HIV vaccine to be trialed in South Africa

A vaccine against HIV will be trialed in South Africa later this year after it met the criteria needed to prove it could help fight the epidemic in Africa.

2.1 million infections were reported in the continent in 2015, two thirds of which occurred in sub-Saharan Africa. A small trial, known as HVTN100, initially took place in South Africa in 2015 to test the safety and strength of immunity the vaccine could provide, ahead of any large-scale testing in affected populations.

  • IMF Chief Christine Lagarde Must Stand Trial over Controversial Deal

France’s top court has ruled that International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde must stand trial in France over a 2008 arbitration ruling that handed 400 million euros to a politically-connected business magnate. Lagarde, who was French finance minister at the time of the deal in favor of tycoon Bernard Tapie, is accused of negligence in the case. She has denied wrongdoing.

A special court ruled in December that Lagarde should stand trial, but she appealed. France’s Court of Cassation on Friday rejected the appeal. Lagarde’s lawyers did not immediately respond to the decision. Lagarde, who was in China on Friday at a Group of 20 summit, has said she had acted “in the best interest of the French state and in full compliance with the law.”
