- The first man in Africa to win an Olympic Gold medal was an Ethiopian, Abebe Bikila , who ran barefoot in the marathon in Rome Olympic in 1960.
- He also won Gold Medal in marathon in the following Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964.
- Miruts yifter won a double gold medal in the 5000 and 10,000 meters in the same event held at Moscow Olympic in 1980. He became the first person in the world to do so
