  • Messenger Makes It Even Easier to Start Conversations

With over 900 million people using Messenger every month, Messenger is the place where you can connect with the people and businesses you care about most. You can also now do more than just send and receive messages. From sending your favorite emoji to chatting with businesses, getting your news delivered just how you like it or making a video call — there’s lots to experience on Messenger.

Up until now, most inbox experiences haven’t kept up with the new ways people connect. So, we’ve been thinking about how we can make it simpler and easier to find what you want to start a conversation.

Now, you’ll see your conversations and ways to connect right where you need them most. You’ll still see the first few most recent messages at the top of your screen, followed by a new Favorites section, which highlights people you message most frequently, so you can quickly pick up your last conversation.

We hope to show you other things happening on Messenger that you might be interested in, too. For example, with the Active Now section, you can see that a good friend or colleague is available in the moment.

  • Facebook now lets users comment with a video

Facebook will now allow users to add videos in their comments. The feature is being globally rolled out to all users on Android and ios platforms, as well as to Facebook's website. The process to add videos in the comment section is similar to adding photos. The camera icon at the end of the comment box shows a video icon, along with the photo upload button. It seems like Facebook is betting big in videos to take on the likes of You Tube.

The social media giant also launched a feature that allows users to upload photos with 360-degree views. Apart from photos taken using 360-degree cameras, panoramic photos taken through smart phone cameras can be converted to 360-degree views on the newsfeed as well.

In other related news, Facebook is now forcing its users to download its private photo-sharing 'Moments' app. It has began sending out warning messages to users that some photos of theirs will be deleted by July 7, if the app is not installed.

  • Secret Harvard meeting finally releases ambitious synthetic human genome proposal

Three weeks ago, 130 scientists, entrepreneurs and policy leaders held an invitation-only, closed-door meeting at Harvard University to discuss an ambitious plan to create synthetic human genomes. Now, after a flurry of criticism over the secrecy of the effort, the participants have published their idea, declaring that they're launching a project to radically reduce the cost of synthesizing genomes – a potentially revolutionary development in biotechnology that could enable technicians to grow human organs for transplantation.

The announcement, published Thursday in the journal Science, is the latest sign that biotechnology is going through a rapidly advancing but ethically fraught period. Scientists have been honing their techniques for manipulating the complex molecules that serve as the code for all life on the planet, and this same issue of the journal Science reports a breakthrough in editing RNA, a molecule that is the close cousin of DNA.

  • Elevated buses that drive over cars are in China's transportation future

As the world's most populated country, China's gridlocked traffic is legendary, especially in major cities like Beijing and Shanghai.

To help combat the problem of traffic jams and maximise limited road space, the country's top engineers have unveiled the Transit Elevated Bus (TEB) at the 19th China Beijing International High-Tech Expo on Sunday.

The TEB is an electrical powered elevated buss that runs on rails and operates high above ground so cars can drive underneath it like driving through a tunnel while it transports passengers from station to station, bypassing road traffic. Each bus has a capacity of 1,200 passengers.
